Mariama S. Dampha, MGA, BSc (she, her) Maternity Care Specialist
Mariama S. Dampha, MGA, BSc, (she, her) rejoined the Developing Brain Institute (DBI) at Children’s National Hospital in November 2024 as a Maternity Care Specialist (Patient Navigator) on the Mommy&Me study team. Mariama earned a Master of Global Affairs and Global Health specialization degree from the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs. Driven by her strong desire to improve maternal and newborn health conditions in the developing world, Mariama conducted research titled, “Perceived Social Support and Access to Postpartum and Newborn Care in Northern Ghana: Exploring Women's experiences Using the Three Delays Model,” in Ghana. She had the privilege of presenting her research
findings at the University of Notre Dame’s 2023 Shaheen Three Minute Thesis presentation and at the American Public Health Association’s 2023 Annual Meeting & Expo. During her time at Keough School of Global Affairs, Mariama worked as a Research Assistant and Graduate Consultant on two research projects funded by the United States Agency for International Development, “Evidence Gap Mapping of Private Sector Engagement in Humanitarian Activities” and “Supporting Holistic and Actionable Research for Education” project.
After completing her Bachelor of Science in Public and Environmental Health at the University of The Gambia, Mariama worked with The Gambia’s Ministry of Health as a Public Health Officer. In this role, she served in 15 communities within the Albreda Health Center catchment area, predominantly providing and facilitating preventive health care to the maternal, newborn and child population. Her roles included administering vaccines, conducting surveillance, facilitating evidence-based community health education and promotion activities, and implementing projects, such as the My Child Solution Project and the Seasonal Malaria Chemotherapy, among other projects and programs.
As a Mommy&Me Maternity Care Specialist, Mariama plans to utilize her passion, commitment, skills and experience in supporting, advocating for and enhancing Black maternal mental health in the District of Columbia.
