SUMA BHAT HOFFMAN M.D., MS, BS Associate Director, Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program

Suma Bhat Hoffman, M.D., MS, BS, is an attending physician in Children’s Neonatology Division. Dr. Hoffman is the associate director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program at Children’s National Hospital. Her primary research focus is evaluating hemodynamic status in neonates and the relationship to short-term and long-term outcomes in this vulnerable population. Dr. Hoffman utilizes Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in these patients to non-invasively measure regional tissue perfusion in relation to their blood pressure and medication exposure.

She also maintains an active interest in simulation and education. Dr. Hoffman earned both her undergraduate degree in Public Health, Nutrition and her medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then went on to complete pediatric residency and perinatal-neonatal fellowship at Children’s National.

From 2012-2020, she was an assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where she worked as a neonatologist in their Level IV neonatal intensive care unit; served as the associate program director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program; director of Neonatal Simulation and NRP training; and was active in mentoring medical students, residents and fellows in research projects. During this time, Dr. Hoffman also earned a Master of Science in Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine with a focus in clinical research.
