Prior to joining DBI, Dr. Kohrt was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Child & Family Studies at California State University, Los Angeles, where she taught courses in grief and loss across the lifespan, child and family violence, and child development in a global context. She is also Director of PASEO Salud Mental, a non-profit whose mission is to increase access to and the quality of mental health care for the Latinx community in the U.S., as well as in low-resource communities in Latin America.

Dr. Kohrt’s research focuses on mental health capacity-building for low-resource settings in Latin America, with a focus on the use of task-sharing models to address perinatal and maternal mental health. Task sharing refers to a strategy of expanding access to mental health services by involving non-specialist providers or community members (such as nurses, teachers or volunteers) in the delivery of basic mental health care.  She is currently engaged in two projects in Guatemala that involve training and supervising community health workers in the detection and management of perinatal mental health disorders. Clinically, Dr. Kohrt has expertise in perinatal mental health, treating adolescents and adults with complex trauma and crisis behaviors, and in bilingual psychological assessment.
