Renee Pen, BA (she/her) Clinical Research Coordinator

Renee Pen, BA, joined the Developing Brain Institute (DBI) in September 2024 as a Clinical Research Coordinator. Renee completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia (UVA), majoring in Biology with a minor in Computer Science. Throughout her undergraduate career, she was a research assistant in the Educational Neuroscience Lab at UVA, working primarily in a study that aims to investigate math development across cohorts of school-age children with respect to their declarative and procedural memory systems. In her final two years as an undergraduate, Renee's independent research project focused on the effect of math anxiety on oxytocin methylation levels in typically developing children, and she presented this project during two internal research conferences. Outside of research, Renee was also a patient care technician in the intensive care unit at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital,

also in Virginia. Her dual experiences at the bedside and within the lab have furthered her passion for health care, and she has a growing interest in how socioeconomic factors may influence an individual’s development and overall health outcomes. Renee is excited to work with DBI and hopes to positively impact neonatal medicine.
