Early Opioid Exposure Tied to Cortical Folding Impairments
Newborns exposed to opioids during pregnancy showed region-specific impairments in cerebral cortical folding compared with nonexposed newborns, according to a cohort study published by JAMA Network Open. “This study provides important new evidence that differences in brain development associated with prenatal opioid exposure are already detectable in the newborn period,” says study lead author Yao Wu, Ph.D., Developing Brain Institute Research Faculty.
