Multisite study IDs early brain differences
A study published in JAMA Network Open and led by researchers from the Developing Brain Institute at Children’s National Hospital and multisite collaborators finds newborns exposed to opioids before birth showed measurable differences in the structure of their developing brains compared with unexposed newborns. The findings offer new insights into how prenatal opioid exposure may affect early brain maturation and could help better understand biological pathways that contribute to cognitive, behavioral and developmental challenges these children experience later in life.
