Fine-tuning our techniques

Making our diagnostic magnetic resonance images even better

Seeking newborn and adult volunteers!

The Developing Brain Institute team needs your help to make our diagnostic magnetic resonance images (MRI) even better. We’re seeking two types of volunteers – adults who are not pregnant and babies – to participate in MRI imaging sessions at Children’s National Hospital aimed at optimizing image acquisition. In addition to our gratitude, volunteers will receive $50 to $100 in remuneration.

Happy baby in striped outfit.

Purpose

The Developing Brain Institute team of research-scientists, engineers and technicians prides itself on capturing sharp magnetic resonance images (MRI). High-quality MRI helps to open windows of therapeutic opportunity even earlier and can improve patient outcomes. We need help from non-pregnant adults and newborns to make our diagnostic images even better and to shorten the time needed to perform a newborn MRI.

Newborns and adults who may participate
  • Adults who are not pregnant
  • Newborns who are younger than 3 months
Newborns and adults who may not participate
  • Adults who are pregnant
  • Newborns who are older than 3 months
What Should I Expect?
  • During your 1 ½ to 2-hour study visit, we will perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of your brain as you lie on a bed that slides inside the MRI machine
  • The scan is safe and painless and will last 45-60 minutes
  • We’ll ask you to feed baby beforehand so your newborn is more likely to fall asleep during the MRI
  • We may ask you to remain still to obtain the best images, and we’ll swaddle your baby to keep them warm and comfortable
  • At the same time as the MRI, we’ll measure your brain waves to gauge sleep quality
  • We’ll give volunteers headphones with music or ear plugs so you don’t hear noise from the MRI machine
  • We’ll review your baby's medical records for such details as medications during pregnancy, birthweight and APGAR score
  • You’ll also complete questionnaires in person or online that describe your mood, stress level, social support and sleep quality
Will I Be Paid?

Adults will receive a one-time payment of $50 after finishing this research study in gratitude for your participation, and newborn participants will receive $100. Both types of volunteers will receive detailed MRI images of their brain and free, study-related parking during their visit to Children’s National.
